Michigan’s UP In Fall: The Drive to Porcupine Mountains

This drive follows a very convoluted route that you probably wouldn’t plan on driving in real life. I decided to take the Covered Road to Freda from Hancock/Hamilton (in a separate post) then drive down another dirt road and eventually get to Ontonagon, and eventually the Porcupine Mountains. I ended up finding Agate Beach and Misery Bay (not much there), but then my GPS tried to take me down Camp 18 Road, which eventually turns into a snowmobile route, not suitable for vehicles. While I edited out that portion, since it didn’t show much of interest, it does explain why I was over at Misery Bay in the first place. Anyhow, once I stopped listening to my GPS and found my way out to M-26, the rest of the route made much more sense. M-26 connects with M-38, then M-64 takes you on through Silver City and into Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

I made this trip in October 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras – one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).
