A drive up Pilot Mountain! Winston Salem to Mount Airy, North Carolina Dashcam

Here’s a look at the drive through North Carolina, headed into Andy Griffith’s stomping grounds. The drive begins in Winston Salem and follows the venerable US 52 north through the city, then into the country as it heads towards Mount Pilot, as Sheriff Taylor would have called it. Pilot Mountain is a North Carolina State Park, and it’s free to drive up to a viewpoint that’s just below the mountain’s signature rocky peak. Once you’ve reached the top of Pilot Mountain, the drive heads back down and continues to the Mount Airy area — a town that has adopted the identity of Mayberry.

I made this trip in August-September 2019.
